Pig iron, also known as crude iron, is an intermediate good used by the iron industry in the production of steel. It is developed by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. Pig iron has a high carbon content, typically 3.8–4.7%, along with silica and other dross, which makes it brittle and not useful directly as a material except for limited applications.

लौह अयस्क को अधिक कार्बन वाले ईँधन (जैसे कोक के साथ प्रगलित करने पर जो माधयमिक उत्पाद बनता है उसे कच्चा लोहा कहते हैं। इसमें प्रायः चूने के पत्थर को फ्लक्स के रूप में प्रयोग करते हैं। ईंधन के रूप में चारकोल और एंथ्रासाइट भी प्रयोग किये जा सकते हैं। कच्चे लोहे में कार्बन की मात्रा बहुत अधिक होती है । इसके कारण कच्चा लोहा बहुत भंगुर होता है। इसे वेल्ड भी नहीं किया जा सकता। अतः इसका सीधे तौर पर बहुत कम उपयोग होता है।
